Councillor Pleased with Scheme Signalling the end for Unnecessary Signs
Conservative Councillor John Mingay has praised a Bedford Borough Council initiative to remove unnecessary signs from highways. The Council has outlined plans that will see an end to signs such as those which point to schools and businesses which no longer exist. In addition, signs warning of new junctions or road layouts which have since become well established routes will also be taken down Other targets will be irrelevant signs warning of slippery conditions, and ‘no waiting’ signs that are no longer applicable.
Councillor Mingay for Newnham ward said;
‘The removal of these signs cannot come a moment too soon. There are plenty of examples in Bedford and the rural areas of signs that are confusing to both motorists and pedestrians alike.
‘Furthermore, we need to be wary of the need to create a safe walking environment for blind people. It will therefore be important to look at the location of particular signs and assess whether we really need them or not, or if the information could be better communicated in another way.
‘I am pleased that the Council has recognised that we have a problem with irrelevant signposting and that it is taking steps to do something about it. I know that the Conservative Group will be assisting the Council in targeting signs that residents feel they would be better off without’.
